Lahore April 3, 2009: The fundamental rights given in the 1973 constitution be treated as core values and made inviolable. This was demanded in a meeting organized yesterday in a local hotel by the Alternate Solutions Institute, first free market think tank of Pakistan. The meeting was attended by students from various institutions and young people in a large number. At this occasion the Institute formally launched its “Sign the Charter of Liberty Campaign.”

As every citizen is equal before law, he has equal right to life, property, happiness, dignity and self-respect and that these are not the exclusive privileges of the elite classes should be seen taking place at least in police stations and courts, if not in the public departments and public life. That there has come a qualitative change in the highest seat of justice in Pakistan should be felt by those who live on the edges and do not know anything about this change. They have been living in waiting for this for the last 62 years. First drops of this rain should exclusively be meant for them! That will be the beauty and the blessing of this change!

March 3 was the day when whole of Pakistan refused shelter to the visiting members of the Sri Lankan cricket team. Viewers watched live air-lifting of the guest cricketers by a Pakistan Army helicopter, and news was they would be flown back to their home country without delay. Was that so insecure in whole of Lahore? Or, throughout Pakistan?

Media Release: 3rd International Property Rights Index 2009

Lahore February 24, 2009: In a study released today in Pakistan by Alternate Solutions Institute, Pakistan’s first free market think tank, data shows that countries that protect physical and intellectual property rights enjoy nearly nine times higher GDP per capita than countries ranking lowest in property rights protections. The study, the 2009 International Property Rights Index (IPRI), compared the protections of physical and intellectual property to economic stability in 115 countries representing 96 per cent of the world’s GDP.
